I discovered my path and began my wellness journey when my mother was diagnosed with Stage 5 breast cancer when I was sixteen. At that time I was also an All-American swimmer with a passion for sports and fitness. But watching my mother battle cancer, I realized that the key to a long and happy life was having a more holistic approach to wellness, so I was inspired to find ways to prevent disease before it manifests in the body. Happily, I discovered it just so happens that aligning our minds and bodies can also help us gain the most amazing aesthetic benefits as well.
Experiencing this motivated me to go on what has been a lifelong quest for knowledge and wisdom about how the body and the mind work and how to achieve the sort of overall well being we all strive for in life. I got a degree nutrition and exercise science, certifications in personal training, Pilates, yoga, and massage, and eventually opened a fitness and wellness center in Manhattan Beach.
It all sounds rosy, right? Well, it turned out that I still had a thing or two to learn about my own self-care.
Having spent my twenties on a mission to educate myself on the mind and body, I found myself in an unhealthy marriage and caring for my mother, whose cancer had returned and which eventually took her life. Meanwhile, my business manager was busy, indeed—embezzling money from my own business and almost bankrupting me! During this crisis in my life, I discovered an incredible technique called Structural Integration. In a nutshell, Structural Integration (or SI) is a healing system that focuses on the way the human body deals with gravity and stress by focusing on the connective tissue or fascia and the alignment of the body. I credit SI with not only helping to quite literally save my life, but also for giving me what I now know is my true calling: To help people find alignment in their bodies and lives and to connect to their authentic selves.
You see, I had to go through my own transformation to help others do the same. My own perfect storm and subsequent “awakening” helped formulate my views on true well being and happiness. I now know that to looking, feeling, and being your best self, requires far more than just working out and eating well. Without first connecting to your own authentic self and getting not just your body but also your emotional life back into correct alignment, you’ll not only never achieve the physical results you want, but you’ll also never experience the inner peace or spiritual fulfillment that ultimately lead to true happiness.
How do I know this? Over my twenty-plus years of practice in fitness and wellness, I’ve used myself and my practice as a laboratory. I’ve taken the best aspects of the various modalities I’ve studied and combined them with SI to come up with my own unique and holistic approach. The proof is in the pudding: I’m proud to say that over the years I’ve helped hundreds of clients finally reach their physical goals. And along the way they’ve all found the side effect has been a more balanced body and a happier life!
Here’s what I’ve learned over the course of the many years I’ve spent working as a certified Pilates instructor, Structural Integration specialist, personal trainer, massage therapist, and yoga instructor: The body works as a whole. No matter how much you want great abs or slim thighs (both of which you can have, by the way), falling into a stale routine that focuses on just one thing really doesn’t work. First of all, it’s not healthy and it throws your body completely out of alignment. Our bodies are designed to move fluidly in all directions, and targeted exercises simply don’t allow for this natural movement. Second of all, it’s likely that this type of strategy won’t net the results you’re ultimately looking for.
Obtaining true well being and a stunning physique involve working with the body as a whole, 3-dimensionally, from top to bottom and from the inside out. A healthy, productive routine won’t only make you feel physically better—it will also enhance your mental and emotional well being. In fact, for many of my clients, regardless of the physical reasons that lead them to me in the first place, it’s often the emotional and mental benefits they receive from my program that propel them to adopt a regular, consistent routine and keep them coming back for more.
